On September 11, 2008 we want to honor the victims of the Twin Towers attack. Many of you may not realize that a valiant Search and Rescue (SAR) dog, Sirius, died in the collapse of the first Tower. His owner, David Lim, was instrumental in saving many lives that day but Sirius was killed in the basement. Although David tried repeatedly to get to his beloved dog he was not able to do so. Later in the day Sirius was recovered and his body removed from the rubble. All rescue efforts ceased and a moment of silence in honor of Sinus was observed. When rescue efforts ended and the New York Search and Rescue teams were honored, David was proudly in the lineup, the only handler without a dog. Later funds were raised and David was the recipient of a new SAR dog but nothing will ever replace Sirius.
Anyone who would like to participate bring a helium filled balloon to the shelter September 11th between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Tie your “Memorial” to the Shelter fence along Crystal Falls Parkway. Due to local construction please do not release balloons but a display proudly proclaiming your memorial to lost Americans and heroes will be much appreciated!
The first quarterly Scavenger Hunt at the Humane Society of Williamson County (HSWC) will be September 20th, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This event is open to HSWC volunteers and residents of central Texas. Participants may be single, double or a team of any size. We are happy to match you with a partner or team.
Sign up starts at 10:00 a.m., all participants will receive a name tag, Scavenger Hunt List, a receipt book, and a donation bag. Any person, business or organization who donates will be given a tax deduction receipt. Items on the list will be supplies that are needed on an ongoing basis at the Shelter. Donors may write a check designated towards a specific item and this will qualify as the item on the list. Local merchants will be “warned” about the hunt which hopefully will make things a little easier.
The top team will be photographed and interviewed for inclusion in media publicity for the Shelter. Your photo will win a place on the Shelter “Whaz Up” board in the office lobby (pending) for the quarter. Participants should bring a beverage and snacks with them and remember you will need to drive from location to location so make sure your gas tank is full...we are grateful for your participation considering today’s fuel cost!
All participants must have an adult in the group, so ask your friends and help us fill up the shelter supply stash and have fun too! For further information or to sign up your team call at Ex 102 or email volunteer@hswc.net.
We all know the old adage “Beauty is only skin deep.” Recently the Humane Society of Williamson County (HSWC) in Leander, Texas discovered yet again that sometimes the true beauty is the spirit of an animal—not what you see on the outside. BEAUTY was the surprise waiting at the shelter gate on Friday, August 8th, a sad and bedraggled young female Weimaraner; her eyes pleaded with the staff for help and comfort, her gentleness apparent from the first moment.
Beauty was skeletal, covered in fleas and ticks, her nails had grown so long she could barely walk and she was suffering from an unknown skin condition. Following a medical assessment it was discovered that a biopsy had been done on her throat in the past but the stitches had never been removed, and her lymph nodes were swollen. Beauty had been on her own and neglected for a long time.
She is a mystery, well behaved and well trained. Beauty heels on a leash, has great social skills, she clearly has had obedience training, she is about three years old. Where did she come from? The staff asked her but she has kept silent about her past and seems to be looking towards a shining new future with excitement. It will be a long, arduous and costly convalescence hopefully leading to complete recovery.
The feeling persists with the HSWC staff that she some how misplaced a caring owner who is still looking for her. Maybe there is a vet out in the Texas yonder that will recognize our gal Beauty. The Shelter staff hopes that someone will recognize Beauty and help us find her missing owner. Right now she is content and has made the Shelter Office her temporary home.
The HSWC “Abby Angel Fund” that helps the Shelter pay for the long term medical care of our animals has been depleted by the costly surgeries of two of our dogs, Bentley and Poppy, and the veterinarian bills for a severely burned dog, Baxter. Beauty needs a benefactor! Please help us raise the funds needed to cover her medical expenses; we are confident that she will turn out to be as beautiful on the outside as she is in so many other ways. Of all the mysteries that surround Beauty, there is nothing mysterious about her ability to love!
Please help us continue to care for pets like Beauty, Bently, Baxter, and Poppy by donating to the Humane Society of Williamson County’s “Abby Angel Fund."
The HSWC has a donated vehicle for sale. Support the Humane Society and get a great deal!
Leander, TX – The Humane Society of Williamson County (HSWC) announced today that it was selected to receive a grant from the American Humane Association’s Meacham Foundation Memorial. The Humane Society of Williamson County received $3,500 to build shade structure for outdoor dog runs. This grant will help HSWC provide much needed shade for the dogs to remain safe and comfortable in the outdoor dog runs during Texas’ long hot season.
“We have the acreage and believe our dogs will become more adoptable with increased physical and mental exercise as a result of being outside in large exercise runs during the day. This very generous grant along with our awesome volunteers’ labor will give us the means to provide permanent shade structures over the majority of our outside runs.”, says Bobbi Leverich, Executive Director.
The Meacham Foundation Memorial was established in 1969, in memory of Tressa Meacham, to provide financial assistance for shelter expansion or improvements that directly impact the welfare of animals in shelters. The grants, in amounts up to $4,000, are awarded each year to several animal care agencies. To be eligible for the grants, agencies must be nonprofit, offer adoption programs and be members of American Humane. This year American Humane received over 200 requests for assistance from organizations across the country.
HSWC operates a No-Kill animal shelter on 22 acres in Leander Texas. HSWC’s mission is to provide innovative programs and services to eliminate pet overpopulation and to improve the lives of pets and people in Williamson County. Last year HSWC adopted over 1,500 dogs and cats and spay/neutered over 2,300 animals at their low cost clinic.
