Success Stories

Did you adopt your pet from the Humane Society of Williamson County? We'd love to hear how you're doing! If you'd like to send us your success story, please send an email and a photo to: webmaster@hswc.net.

MiloMilo

We adopted Milo in March 2008. We kept his original name Milo because we felt it had character and fit him well. To be honest Im not sure if we adopted him or he adopted us. The minute we got him home he made himself right at home. He sleeps in my bed. He is always ready for a good scratching any time anyone tries to watch TV. He loves to  put his paws on the sides of your face and give you kisses. He now only answers to Milo he looks at you like you're crazy if you say here kitty kitty. I always tell everyone he's the sweetest cat in world; he lets us live with HIM and pay all the bills!  We just love him!

Murphey Murphey aka Diesel

I’d just wanted to send an update about “Diesel” the 2 year old Manchester Terrier we adopted there last week. We arrived at the shelter hoping to get a kitten as a companion for our temperamental adult cat. But, we stopped to look at the dogs first and we instantly fell in love with this little guy. He was so adorable, even though he peed on my foot on our walk around your campus! Well, we were sold and so we ended up with a dog instead of a cat.

“Diesel” didn’t seem to know his name, so we renamed him Murphey. He’s the sweetest, calmest dog ever and gets along very well with our cat. He loves to hide under blankets and snuggle with me, and he’s very well behaved. He always waits to be invited up on the furniture and after only a week of working with him he’s learned “sit”, “lay” and “stay” and we’re working on “come” “shake” and “roll over”. We’re also practicing his leash walking.

We took Murphey to the vet and learned that he had a displaced knee cap that will eventually require surgery, but we love our little guy and are happy that we’ll be able to provide him with a fully functioning knee at the first sign of any discomfort.

Thanks for being such a great facility, we were impressed with the amount of land you have for the animals and we may just be back to get that kitten after all!

OwenOwen

In June we attended a dog agility show out in Hutto. At the time we only had one puppy and had been looking to adopt a playmate for her. I had looked at different shelters and adoption places for the newest addition to our puppy family and could not get any puppy to even to come up to me which is unheard of normally. I am a doggie magnet. Upon entering the agility show we were greeted by this happy go lucky black and tan little puppy. He ran right over and jumped up on me. The search was over, he was the one. Owen has been a super little boy with the exception of his nasty chewing habit. :-) Oh well, how many shirts can one person possibly have anyway. He has adjusted to his new home very well and is now the best of friends with our other puppy. We couldn't have asked for a better match.

Thanks,
Erin and Philippe and Nicky

ThiefThief aka Toto

Sorry it's taken so long to email you.  I've renamed Toto to Thief.  Since I had a dog named Gypsy I thought I should follow the song Gypsy, Tramps, and Thieves and geta dog named Thief!  Thief is such a sweet gentleman and he adores his little sister.

I also wanted to email you to thank you and your team at the Humane Society of Williamson County for everything that you did for me.  You all are such nice individuals.  You really care about your animals and you really want to help people get the animal that's best for them.

Thanks again!

Chelsea

TycoTyco

My family and I adopted a wonderful Jack Russell mix from your location on August 10th. He has made lots of new friends in our neighborhood, both human and canine. He is one of the most gentle and loving dogs I have ever met. It’s rare to find a dog that allows you to take a bone from their mouth without at least a little growl but not Tyco. He doesn’t seem to mind.

He is not afraid of loud noises or storms. He is friendly to both adults and kids. He has only gotten loose twice and both times he ran across the street and squeezed into the fenced area to see his new girlfriend. The only bad habit we have found is that he isn’t fully housebroken but we are working on it.

I can’t imagine why he was donated in the first place and why he was adopted the moment he became available!

I am also pleasantly surprised and thankful that he has a clean bill of health from the vet with no fleas! All those animals and no fleas! You guys do a fantastic job!

Thanks for everything.

Leanne

HopeHope aka Fudge

Hello, my husband and I adopted Fudge two weeks ago and if you don't remember she was a 2 year old, VERY timid and shy Miniature Dachshund that had heartworms.

Well we're happy to say that she (named Hope now) is doing GREAT! She is very playful with her new friend PJ our other Jack Russell Terrier and loves to be lazy around the house. Her heartworm treatment is going well, and we HOPE to see her improve more as the months pass.

We love her sooo much and can't thank you guys enough for giving us a special dog in our life. We HOPE to bring her by so she can say hello! Thanks again!

Cricket

Cricket and her new dog siblingsCricketWe adopted Natalie from your Shelter on Sunday, 8/10/08, after seeing her on the news as your pet of the week that morning. Her name is now Cricket because she chirps just like one.  :)

Claire and PierreClaire

Hi, Everyone!

My name is Claire, but you may remember me as Sugar from back in 2005.  I was adopted just before Memorial Day 2005 and went to live in a great home in Round Rock.  In December 2005, my little brother, Pierre joined us from another shelter in Leander.  (Was there a stray poodle convention in Leander?)  Since then, I've moved to Plano and I now live on Galveston Island.  A baby has joined my family and she's my BFF.  I love her.  I'm very protective of her and give her kisses when she's crying.  She likes to look at me and laugh.  I have had such a good time since my stay with you at HSWC.  Thanks for everything you did for me and thanks for helping my mommy find me on Petfinder.

Woof!
Claire Eppner (now Ethridge...I got adopted when Mommy got married)

Bonnard

I adopted Bonnard, formerly Bevo, from your shelter June 28. A link to his website is here: http://web.me.com/jidol/Site/My_new_home.html.

He's a great dog. He did contract kennel cough from his stay at Town Lake before you picked him up; my vet said Town Lake had an outbreak and that's likely where he got it. We treated him and he seems to have cleared up.

He's a bundle of energy, good mild mannered dog. He loves other dogs, cats, kids, all people. He does jump up when excited and his house trained. I couldn't have asked for a better new friend. He has been good company and I hope he has a long time with us.

He's been busy since he got here, but has found his favorite places and bosses me around plenty. Thanks for your help.

Jennifer

LouieLouie

We've had Louie for just over two weeks now and we're in love. He is getting settled in, sleeps under the covers with us every night, and LOVES to go on walks around the neighborhood. He gets along well with the cats (doesn't pay much attention to them actually...except when I'm loving on the cats instead of him...then he jumps in for his loving) and gets so happy when we meet other dogs. We took him to a 4th of July BBQ and there were 3 other BIG dogs there.  Little Louie held his own.  He pranced around like he was the boss, stole bones and toys from the boxer and was an all around sensation with the human guests. He was the smartest too, convincing all the other dogs that hanging out by the grill (while the burgers were being cooked) was a good idea.  It paid off as some tiny meat scraps got dropped and Louie was first in line.

He's hands down the sweetest, chillest, kindest dog of all time.  I have never had a dog as an adult and this is the perfect fit for me. I'm madly and passionately in love with him.  Thank you everyone at the HSWC for being so kind and saving Louie for us.  It was meant to be.  And as they say in Fairy Tales....happily ever after.

ZoeZoe

I have been meaning to contact you to thank you for bringing Zoe into our lives.  When we visited the shelter in March 07 it was because I had promised my 5 year old son that he could see some puppies.  We had thought about adopting an adult dog but, after a bad experience with a different shelter, I wasn't sold on the idea of trying again.  That was until we saw Zoe - our blonde lab.

She had just given birth to a bunch of mastiff puppies and, while everyone was playing with them and taking them home, she was in a pen in the back just waiting - for us as it turned out.  She licked my baby through the gate and that was it!!  I took her home a few days later after I tried to talk myself out of it and just couldn't.  It is the best thing I ever did!!  She has been so well behaved right from the start and has hardly needed any training after the initial settling in period.

My 2 rather wild boys love to play with her in the yard and she walks really well on the leash alongside the stroller for our nightly walk.  We cannot imagine our lives without her now - my parents even wanted to take her home to Scotland with them - NOT HAPPENING!!!!!  Thank you HSWC for giving us our forever pet.  We may be returning for a smaller companion for her!!

BellaBella

Bella is a wonderful dog!  We can't figure out why she was with you for over three months last summer.  Yes, she loves attention.  Okay, she demands it!  During the first few months she would follow us from room to room.  Rarely did we have a moment without her at our feet.  Even though she loves attention, she also gives back with a lot of love.  She has brought a lot of laughter and happiness to our home.

When we first brought her home, we were in an apartment and she was such a good apartment dog.  She rarely barked when people came up the stairs or walked by our door.  We've since moved into a house with a nice sized back yard.  She enjoys laying outside in the mornings by herself.  She is even getting better about the amount of time she spends walking around after us everywhere we go.  Every now and again we'll walk out of a room without her following.

We went to Michigan for Christmas and she got sick after coming back home from the kennel.  She was very tolerant of us giving her meds for a week and bounced right back.

She has met a series of parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and cousins and they all say the same thing:  What a sweet dog!

Jack aka MidnightJack aka Midnight

I wanted to send a couple of pictures of Jack, known as Midnight to you all. We've had Jack for about 6 months now and are totally in love with him. Jack was at HSWC for about 6 months before we found him. While I am so thankful he was there waiting on me, I can’t believe nobody looked into his beautiful brown eyes and saw all the love and devotion he had to share. It breaks my heart that a sweet dog like him had to spend such a long time without his own family.

Now Jack is never more than a few feet away from me and prefers to be in my lap (he’s really to big for that, but I can’t tell him no). He believes that he has won the puppy lottery and the main prize is getting to sleep in my bed at night, head on my pillow and under the blankets! Jack and his brother, Gus (another back lab mix), love to play and go for walks.

We’ve completed some basic obedience training at Triple Crown and are thinking about going back for more. I can’t thank you all enough for helping me and my family find the perfect dog to share our home with.

Thank you,
Erin

DitchDitch

I’m Joel, the guy that adopted Ditch.   We’ve been together just over two weeks - he’s very happy in his new home, & I’m really glad I adopted him.  As advertised, he’s very high energy and wants to play all the time.  He gets lots of exercise and now that he’s familiar with his surroundings we’ve started training.  Ditch is very smart and is learning quickly.  He reacts to affection better than treats, at least so far.  He’s pretty tired by 10 pm and goes right into his crate for the evening.  Let Kelly know we’re doing great, and thanks for everything.

Best regards,

Joel

ZoeyZoey aka Pebbles

I am Jamie. My family adopted Zoey (known as Pebbles to HSWC) in May 2007. Since then she attended basic dog training and passed with flying colors. She loves to run and play fetch. She is always eager to show off her tricks. Zoey gets along really well with our children as well as the cat. Thanks HSWC for a wonderful addition to our family.

Jamie

BuddyBuddy

My family and I were traveling home from Austin last Saturday after our son finished playing in a soccer tournament.  We stopped at the outlet mall to exchange a pair of jeans at Aeropostle.  My 17 yr old son saw Petsense across the walkway and the next thing I knew, he had fallen in love with an 8 week old lab mix puppy.  We had lost our 13 year old Old English Sheepdog mix last spring to heart disease, so we had been thinking about getting another dog.  Well, my husband and I took one look at this pup and that was it.  He slept the entire way back to Dallas with no accidents.  We wanted to compliment your fostering program.  We have had many puppies over the years and he is by far the most well adjusted and well socialized pup we have ever had the pleasure of sharing our lives with!  He is our son's dog and his new name is Buddy.  He sleeps with Joe and adores his new best friend.  He also shares a home with a 2 year old Beagle named McGruff who we rescued when he was 2 days old and nurtured to a now (a little too robust) extremly spoiled guy.  He is displaying all the classic signs of a severe case of sibling riverly by ignoring Buddy at all times, stealing his toys and chew things as soon as Buddy is not looking.  We know they will be friends soon, but it is very funny to watch this Beagle be so jealous!

Thank you for such a wonderful adoption experience.  We look forward to many happy years with our newest family member, Buddy.

Sincerely,

The Denton Family
Plano, Texas

BugBug

I just wanted to let Loren and Kelly (probably misspelling both of your names) know that we just love Bug! She is adapting very well! She is sweet, protective. She is loving running when we go for our walks and probably has lost about 5 pounds. She weighed 61 pounds when we brought her home. I just wanted to thank you for helping us to get together with our newest family member.

Thanks so much! Deidra and Jeff

CallistoKera

I just wanted to send a couple of pictures of Kera to you.  Eric (my husband) was so excited when I brought her home!!  He could not believe that she was his.  He did not want to leave her side.  He slept on the floor in the kitchen for hours because he did not want to leave her side.  He now sleeps in the bed, but gets up with her twice a night to let her out to go potty.  He did decide to change her name to Callisto. We are still working on the potty training, but she loves her new home and it is so much fun to see her personality grow every day.  Thanks again for all of your help and making this Christmas memorable.

Thanks again,
Crystal

Foxy and GatorGator and Foxy

I saw your update page on your website and just wanted to drop a quick line about two dogs that we adopted from your shelter near the end of June 2006. My husband and I had just returned from our honeymoon and decided on a whim to make a trip down to your shelter. We had talked about adopting a dog but hadn't really pursued it. Well, we found Foxy and Gator, both of whom had been owner releases. Both dogs were also on "the list" as the shelter had not become a no-kill facility at that point. (I'm known as a bargain shopper, so I like to say that I got a 2-for-1 special since their adoption fees were reduced.) We ended up keeping the names, and almost two years later, both dogs are happy and healthy, well-behaved, and as sweet as can be! We can't understand why anyone would have wanted to give these precious dogs up.

Foxy took about a year to come out of her shell, but she is now a playful, fearless destroyer of rope toys who is working on her leash-walking skills. She has the most gorgeous, silky, red and white coat. As my father commented, "That's the softest dog I've ever petted!"

Gator was only about 9 months old when we adopted him, and he has grown into 60 pounds of beautiful, silly energy. He is very loving and obedient and loves to go for walks and play with his toys. Gator is an attention hog and loves to sit in our laps. Usually, we don't mind, as long as we are forewarned. Sixty pounds of dog hurling through the air towards you can be a bit of a surprise!

Another successful adoption story from HSWC! ~ The Connelys

Jesse JamesJesse James

My name is Nita, and my e-mail to you is two-fold I suppose; first I believe I have a WAY beyond success story for you that started back in 1994 and will live on even though the beautiful boy I adopted from WCHS is no longer with us in physical form as of April 18, 2008.

Secondly, I would like for Jesse's legacy to live on not only in me and as an inspiration to me, but I thought perhaps his story could be an inspiration for others to see the beauty in adopting a homeless animal - maybe those that never have because they believe somehow that animals in shelters are second best, or that they are missing something by doing so ... I think my story shows how not doing so could lend to missing everything!

Here's my story: Brown dog, male, dachshund mix, release number 457 at the Williamson County Humane Society located (then) at 2121 N. Mays in Round Rock, TX on March 29, 1994 - this is how he came into my life, no name, nothing known except that he was running in the streets of Round Rock for 3 days before someone called animal control to have him picked up. He was thought to be 4 years of age. The weeks precluding that March day in 1994 were spent visiting the shelter with a broken heart from a tragically lost pet a few months prior. Somehow, this dog, this special entity drew me to him with a force that not only surprised me, but it comforted me and brought me heartfelt joy.

For 14 years that is exactly what this brown dog did, and as time passed it became deeper and more complex; we communicated in ways that required no words and we bonded closer than any human I have ever known. Age graced this brown dog with charm, and many other people were drawn to his vibrant and inspiring spirit. Even on afternoon walks I could see people smiling in their cars as they slowed down to look at him in his essence – to see his thorough enjoyment of life as he knew it, simple yet complete. He showed me this gift every day, and even on the last day of his life I could still see this flicker and spark from what very little flame he had left.

Though the pain of losing him is unbearable at times, I know I too gave him gifts, and the gifts started with adopting him and showing him a life he would have never had without adoption. Our gifts are still alive in my memories, my heart and my soul – and they will never leave me as long as I live.
