JP Cardwell's Eagle Scout Project

Congratulations to John Paul Cardwell for completing his Eagle Scout Project at the Humane Society of Williamson County! Many shelter dogs are now enjoying some free run time outside in our renovated outside dog runs.

John is a 16 year old Stony Point High School student. John’s Eagle Scout project involved making repairs and improvement to a group of our outside dog runs at the Humane Society. Dogs now get some time out of their kennels to expend some energy and enjoy nice weather. We humans and furry friends at the Humane Society want to thank John and all of his helpers for selecting our organization for his Eagle Scout Project.

Below is an interview with John.

Question: Why did you select the Humane Society of Williamson County for your Eagle Scout Project?

Answer: I like dogs and we’ve adopted from the HSWC in the past. I also thought it would be a project that would attract younger scouts to participate as almost everyone loves animals.

Question: What support did you receive to accomplish your project?

Answer: I had several organizations help out. Capitol Aggregates donated all of the gravel needed to fill the dog runs. JS Trucking delivered the gravel for no charge. Lowe’s Home Improvement gave us a 50% discount on the other supplies needed to complete the project. Papa Johns pizza donated lunch for all the folks working on the project. I had lots of support from my parents, my troop and my classmates. It is very nice that Stony Point requires students to put in service hours. This was a motivator for my classmates.

Question: How did you select improving the outside dog runs as your project for the Humane Society?

Answer: When I visited the shelter I saw the condition of the outside dog runs and thought the dogs would really enjoy having outside time. I also saw that the staff was having a hard time cleaning the inside kennels as they had no place outside to put the dogs during the cleaning process.

Question: What were the most rewarding and challenging aspects of your project?

Answer: The most rewarding was at completion seeing the satisfaction on the faces of all the people who made the project happen. Also it was great to have more people recognize the good work that HSWC is doing for the animals. As for challenges, the whole project was a challenge. I especially found getting commitment for donations and sticking to my timeline challenging.

A big THANKS to John from everyone at the HSWC!

YOU can help too! Find out more about group projects at the HSWC here.
