Community Rehoming Program

The HSWC limits pet intake for space reasons; this means that if you are trying to surrender your pet to the HSWC, you may be put on a waiting list until space becomes available. Or perhaps you'd prefer for your pet to stay in a comfortable home environment rather than a shelter environment while you try to rehome your pet.

If this is the case, please consider the Community Rehoming Program offered by the HSWC.

The Community Rehoming Program is an innovative approach to rehoming that doesn't require your pet to live at the animal shelter. If your pet passes a standard temperament evaluation administered by the HSWC, you can be admitted into the Community Rehoming Program right away. Your pet will be featured on our Petfinder site (and our website). You can also bring your pet to our offsite adoption days. We will handle the application, but you have the option to turn down any applicant.

In exchange, until your pet is adopted (or until your pet can be admitted to the shelter, if that is an option you wish to pursue), you must house and care for your pet, and take responsibility for bringing your pet to adoption events and showing him or her off to potential adopters. Additionally, the adoption fee ($95) will go to the HSWC.

The Community Rehoming Program is a great way for you to get extra publicity for your pet! At the same time, it avoids the drawbacks associated with admitting a pet into the shelter system.

For more information about the Community Rehoming Program, call our customer service representatives at (512) 260-3602.
