Group and Scout Projects

Does your group want to do a service project? Looking for a project for your Eagle or Silver award? HSWC has many suitable projects for scouts and groups of all ages. Check out our listing of improvement projects at the HSWC. Have your own project idea? We'd love to hear from you. Contact our Facility Chair at klutz@hswc.net.

Please note that unless otherwise agreed upon, groups must provide all equipment and materials necessary to complete your project.

Groups interested in completing projects must fill out a Group Facility Improvement Project Application (click here to download) and return it by fax at 260-7563, email to klutz@hswc.net, or drop it off at 10930 E. Crystal Falls Parkway, Leander TX 78641.


Groups - General

  • Create new outdoor dog kennels – Construct kennels out of heavy duty chain link fencing, put in a cement border, weed cloth, and pea gravel.
  • Donation drop off center – Design and construct a donation collection structure, provide and label 5-6 large bins to hold donations, and provide a large bulletin board for us to post flyers for needed donations. Group must provide all materials necessary to construct center.
  • Painting projects – Clean and paint various rooms in the main office including the hallway, Director’s office, holding, isolation, and quarantine. Group must provide brushes/rollers.
  • Food drives – Organize a pet food/pet supply drive in their neighborhood and deliver to the shelter.
  • Can drive – Collect cans, bring them to the recycling center, and give proceeds to the HSWC.
  • Fence painting - We will provide the paint. You provide the scrapers to scrape off old paint and paint brushes and pans.
  • Car washing - Wash inside and outside the four shelter vehicles.
  • Window pane installation - Install double paned windows for our office.
  • Ventilation barn project – Install ventilation devices on roof of kennel.
  • Cattery screens – Purchase and install solar screens for windows in the cattery.
  • Heavy material disposal – Remove and properly dispose of occasional bulk trash items.
  • Fix flood zone – Design and implement solution for flood area in front of office.
  • Lighting – Solicit businesses to get fluorescent lighting added to conference room, front office, and grooming room.
  • Fence construction – Design and build a fence to block crate cleaning area from public view.
  • Pothole repair – Purchase material needed to repair pot holes in driveway. Spread driveway material as appropriate.
  • Scrolling marquee – Purchase and install large scrolling marquee at front entrance. Requires digging holes, setting posts, attaching sign.
  • Reframe back porch of kennel.
  • Electric gate – Purchase and install an electric gate at the front entrance.
  • Reinforce outside bottom and in between adjoining kennels of all the free standing kennels in the yard to prevent dogs from digging out. Project requires digging a trench around the kennel, and filling with concrete. (Or - fill with sand to then level cinder blocks all the way around and in-between kennels.)
  • Install ceiling tiles.
  • Remove old wooden fencing. Dig up posts and dispose of fencing.


Girl Scouts ages 6-13 – Bronze Award

(15 hours of service, not necessarily a project)
  • Kong stuffing – Come to the shelter and stuff kongs with treats and peanut butter and distribute to the dogs.
  • Food drives – Organize a pet food/pet supply drive in their neighborhood and deliver to the shelter.
  • Car washing – Come out and wash the shelter vehicles inside and out.
  • Cat toys – Create disposable fish or pipe cleaner cat toys. Instructions available.
  • Donations scavenger hunt – Split up into teams and work your neighborhoods to collect donations.
  • Host a neighborhood microchip clinic – Plan, organize, advertise, promote a neighborhood microchip clinic for the Humane Society (Not applicable for scout troops)
  • Car wash – Host a car wash at a busy business and donate proceeds to the HSWC. (Not applicable for scout troops)
  • Can drive – Collect cans, take them to a recycling center, and give proceeds to the HSWC.

Potential Eagle Scout / Girl Scout Silver Award Projects

  • Donation drop off center – Design and construct a donation collection structure, provide and label 5-6 large bins to hold donations, and provide a large bulletin board for us to post flyers for needed donations. Group must provide all materials necessary to construct center.
  • Create an outdoor cat enclosure – An open air netted area so we can give cats some outside time.
  • Outdoor kennel improvements – Prevent dogs from digging out by lining the edges of the kennel floors with a concrete border.
  • Outdoor kennel improvements – Lay weed cloth on ground, improve with new pea gravel; repair fencing as needed.
  • Outdoor kennel improvements – Add chain link fencing to the tops of kennels to keep climbers in.
  • Build fence for cleaning area – Design and build a fence to block crate cleaning area from public view.
